As 2008 draws to a close, golf courses around Long Island are still hanging on to their fittest blades of green grass before the winter's cruel temperatures and blankets of snow and slop turn everything to a muddy shade of sickly brown. Until then, there are some decent bargains and conditions to be found.
Winter rates at Calverton Links, Hamlet Wind Watch and Willow Creek, Middle Island, Stonebridge and Rock Hill were noted back in the beginning of December. In spite of the dropping temps, now is an excellent time for beginners to learn the game and test out the new starter set they bagged during the holidays. All players can experience some of the better courses at a great value, without the intimidation of a big Summer crowd or a fast foursome on their tail. Though the mid-December snow and ice dealt a direct hit to course conditioning, there is still some time to find a combination of quality golf and comfortable playability.
following are some of the offseason 18-hole rates at area courses,
which in many cases have already been in place for several weeks or even months. For
full details, contact the course pro shops or visit their websites. Also be sure to call ahead regarding temporary tees and/or greens, as this information is rarely posted on course websites. Note that these do not represent discounted rates at all courses!
