December is here, but many Long Island courses remain in prime playing condition. At Mill Pond on Thanksgiving, the course looked nearly as it would on a morning in June, the only difference being about three layers of clothing per golfer and some sandy, recently aerated greens. Everything else played close to its peak, and the weather turned out better than one could expect for late November.
Winter rates have a way of making the cold more bearable through the months of November and December, before the fairways and greens begin to take a real beating from the elements. They also make it easier for beginners to experience some of the better courses at a great value, without the intimidation of a big Summer crowd or a fast foursome on their tail. Though many courses remain open in some capacity through the entire season, the number of days that successfully combine quality golf and comfortable playability is quickly counting down to nil.
The following are some of the offseason 18-hole rates at area courses, which in many cases have already been in place for several weeks. For full details, contact the course pro shops or visit their websites. Note that these do not represent discounted rates at all courses:
- Calverton Links: $35 to walk/$45 to ride during the week; $40/$50 on weekends. Rates include range balls and lunch.
- Hamlet Willow Creek: $50 to ride during the week, $60 on weekends. Twilight rates kick in at 1:00 -- $35 on weekdays, $40 on the weekend.
- Hamlet Wind Watch: $60 with cart all week, $45 after noon, $35 after 2:00.
- Middle Island Country Club: $30 to walk/$40 to ride during the week; $45/$55 on weekends.
