I noticed earlier this week that the website for the Pine Hills Country Club is out of service. For anyone who has visited that site in the past in search of helpful information about the course, layout or rates, this latest development isn't necessarily the worst thing in the world. Unless I'm missing something -- as in, an entirely different web address -- the designers of the site seemed more intent on marketing the pro shop and Pine Hills' sister course, Heatherwood Golf Club in Centereach, than the Pine Hills course itself. This is too bad, because Pine Hills is one of the nicest facilities around, but you wouldn't know it by perusing its weak site. Let's hope this signals a long-overdue site redesign and nothing worse.
Pine Hills is long, challenging par-73 course in Manorville. Accuracy is important on this snug layout, where trees surround every hole and water comes into play on half. Ponds guard the front of two greens and another protects the bend of a dogleg on a 475-yard par-5. The course was the site of one of my most enjoyable rounds of 2008, a solo jaunt on an August Sunday with nobody ahead and nobody behind -- though the seclusion did little to make the numbers in my scorecard any smaller.
