It flew a little farther beneath the radar than the New York Islanders did when they won their third consecutive Stanley Cup in the 1981-82 NHL season, but Bethpage State Park clinched a three-peat of its own last week when the Long Island Press revealed the winners of its annual Best of Long Island competition.
Bethpage bagged top honors in the "Best Public Golf Course" category for the third straight year, beating out Eisenhower Park and fellow New York State park Montauk Downs for the crown. Long Island Press readers were undoubtedly swayed by Bethpage's reputation as the premier public golf facility in the country and its exposure during the 2009 U.S. Open. The park draws hundreds of golfers to eastern Nassau County every day for rounds on the famous Black Course, the renowned Red, the Blue, Green and Yellow.
Six miles to the west, historic Eisenhower Red is the main attraction at the 54-hole complex in East Meadow. The Devereux Emmet design is one of a dozen Long Island courses to receive four stars from Golf Digest in the magazine's Best Places To Play listing. Third-place finisher Montauk Downs earned 4-1/2 stars from Golf Digest and was recently featured in the magazine's "Long Drives" feature. Newsday rates it as Long Island's #2 public course, and Golfweek ranks Montauk Downs #38 in its list of America's Best Municipal Courses.
