Great Rock Golf Club general manager and friend of Golf On Long Island Brian Curtin was spotlighted in a recent Newsday column by Mark Herrmann, along with course superintendent and fellow Shinnecock Hills Golf Club alum Dan Wolf. The two spent years at the prestigious Southampton club before making their way north to the popular public course in Wading River during the last two seasons. As Herrmann notes, many private-club qualities and comforts made the trip with them.
Opened in 2001, Great Rock is one of Long Island's newest courses, and also one of its most unique. It is a relatively short course (6,254 from the tips) that requires precise shotmaking and the ability to operate on extremely fast putting surfaces. Great Rock features numerous dogleg holes and dramatic elevation changes. The uphill, par-4 tenth hole is part of Newsday's Long Island Dream 18 and Golfing Magazine's Dream Golf Club. Great Rock's opener is part of the Dream Golf Club as well.
In his column, Herrmann describes Curtin's and Wolf's desire to go above and beyond the norm to serve Long Island's public golfers and apply the expertise acquired from their tenure at Shinnecock. As noted by Golf On Long Island last July, "From the clubhouse facilities and staff, to the bar, restaurant and patio, and ultimately to the course itself, everything at Great Rock contributes to an atmosphere typical of a private club."
