Stunning news: Bethpage and Montauk Downs are featured in a list of elite public golf courses.
Even more stunning news: Bethpage Black is ranked #1.
Golfweek released its list of Best Municipal Courses for 2010 on Thursday and, as usual, the Black Course sits atop the leaderboard, followed a few tiers behind by its next-door neighbor Bethpage Red and state-park sister course Montauk Downs. The Black, home of the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Open Championships, also topped Golfweek's muni list in 2009.
While the Black maintained its lofty status, Montauk Downs and the Red Course both climbed a couple of notches since last year's rankings. Montauk jumped from #38 in 2009 to #33, and the Red skipped ahead from 20th to 17th.
Golfweek's Best Muni list rates the top 50 government-owned layouts nationwide. Courses are evaluated and ranked based on conditioning, routing, variety, memorability and other categories.
All three courses are fixtures on Golfweek's Best Courses You Can Play listing as well. In March, the magazine ranked the Black #1, Red #9 and Montauk #14 among public-access layouts in New York State. Montauk also received some national recognition in February when Golf Digest highlighted the wind-swept course in its "Long Drives" travel feature.
