Another national list, another opportunity for national exposure for the Black Course at Bethpage State Park.
Golf Digest published its list of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses for 2011-12 in the current May issue, and the Black once again represents Long Island public golf in the top half. The course comes in at #36 on a list headed by Augusta National Golf Club and which also includes Long Island powerhouses Shinnecock Hills and National Golf Links in the top 10.
In the Digest's ranking of America's Greatest Public Courses, Bethpage lands at #7, just ahead of Pinehurst No. 2 and TPC Sawgrass. Pebble Beach sits atop that list.
A fun wrinkle to this year's edition of America's Greatest is the magazine's creation of an NCAA Tournament-style bracket that pits the top 64 publics against one another in a "competition" determined by reader votes. The tourney will run through the summer with voting open on a few matches per week at Golf Digest's Facebook page. Brackets and a link to vote are available at GolfDigest.com.
You can vote for Bethpage Black beginning May 26 when the #2-seed local favorite takes on longshot Hawktree Golf Club of Bismarck, North Dakota.
