Good news for anyone who's ever found themselves "in jail" at the heavily wooded Spring Lake Golf Club in Middle Island. The 27-hole facility is providing wayward shooters with a little bit of breathing room this season and in the future by removing some trees around the course.
According to Spring Lake golf director and teaching pro Cristy Grzymala, one hole that is more free of trees is the par-4 10th on the Thunderbird 18. The left side of this short dogleg right frequently collects pulled tee shots and leaves players with either a blocked approach to the green or a lost ball. A maintenance building off the left rough only complicates search efforts. Now, fewer trees on that side should help players locate their balls faster and move play along.
Don't get too comfortable, though. Spring Lake still requires precise shots, whether you're on the Thunderbird Course or the Sandpiper 9. For more information on Spring Lake, check out the Thunderbird and Sandpiper flyovers.
