This might arrive as old news to those who play municipal golf in the City of Glen Cove on a regular basis, but for those who do not, the formerly par-66 Glen Cove Golf Club now skirts Dosoris Pond and Long Island Sound as a par-67 course. Sometime between our last visit in June 2009 and this past offseason, Glen Cove's par-4 10th hole was relisted as a par-5.
The hole parallels and is nearly the identical twin of Glen Cove's par-5 opener, which plays to #10's left. Both holes bend softly to the right away from adjacent Dosoris Pond. Previously listed at 447 yards, #10 now comes in at 467. Glen Cove regulars can comment on whether the hole was extended or simply remeasured.
Frankly, it would come as no surprise if Glen Cove reviewed yardages around the entire course. At times we found that the yardage on the scorecard varied greatly from the distance posted at the tee. In one instance, a par-3 was listed with two different distances nearly 30 yards apart -- quite a quandary when selecting clubs. This season, all 18 holes have updated measurements, raising the yardage of the course from 5,003 in 2009 to its current 5,131. In addition, the scorecard now includes distances from the middle tees.
Glen Cove is a featured course in Golfing Magazine's 2011 Free Golf Program, which is open for registration at the magazine's website. Its par-4 seventh hole (pictured) was selected last month as a member of Golf On Long Island's "Nassau 18." You can read more about Glen Cove by taking a look at the course flyover.
