Free on Mondays and looking to raise money for local organizations by playing a top Long Island public course? Hamlet Willow Creek Golf & Country Club in Mount Sinai will host the 26th annual Mather Golf Classic on Monday, June 6, and the fifth annual Dix Hills Basketball Association (DHBA) Golf Classic on June 13. Both outings are scramble format.
Proceeds from the Mather Golf Classic will help support nursing education programs at the John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson. A full day of events includes sign-in and breakfast at 9 a.m., lunch on the course, a post-round cocktail hour and buffet at 4:30, and dessert and raffles to cap off the festivities later in the evening. Shotgun start is scheduled for 11:00.
Entry fee is $500 per golfer. Sign up to play or participate as a sponsor by downloading the event registration form at www.matherhospital.org/golf.
One week later, the annual Dix Hills Basketball Association Golf Classic kicks off with an 11 a.m. brunch followed by a round that includes a $1 Million Shot, 2011 Car Hole-in-One Contest, Beat the Pro, and long-drive and closest-to-the-pin challenges. Gifts, prizes, raffles and cocktails will be available after the round at a 6 p.m. dinner and awards ceremony. Proceeds from the event will support the many DHBA programs available to children in the community.
Entry fee is $250 per golfer. To register as a player or sponsor, visit the event website.
Designed by Stephen Kay, Hamlet Willow Creek opened for play in 2005 on a triangular slice of Suffolk County that could easily stand in for a Floridian golf course in a travel magazine. It is one of Long Island's most visually impressive golf destinations -- public or private. With intimidating water hazards and fast, sloping greens, it is also among the Island's most formidable layouts. The slope rating of 133 ranks behind only Bethpage Black, Montauk Downs and Rock Hill.
