Who knew? The key to long-awaited amateur-golf glory just might be .... your 8-year-old nephew?
Sure. Thanks to The Family Golf Challenge, adults can team up with the junior golfers in their family (age 7 to 17) to compete in skill competitions and shoot for the opportunity to reach a regional playoff later this year. Challenge events will be held this Friday and Saturday (July 29-30) at Long Island National Golf Club in Riverhead, August 19 at Eisenhower Park and August 20 at Bethpage State Park.
The Family Golf Challenge partnered with The First Tee of Metropolitan New York, the Metropolitan Golf Association (MGA) and Golf Digest to bring these events to local courses and residents. Of each $15 entry fee, $5 will be donated to The First Tee. Part of the Challenge's mission is to raise awareness of The First Tee and its endeavors, and to introduce new and young golfers to the game.
Two-person family teams can compete in putting and long-drive challenges. Players can participate in both competitions as many times as they'd like and with different family members, provided each team submits a separate fee for each entry. The long-drive competition will be determined by combined yardage; the putting challenge will be scored on a points system.
