Snowstorms and temperatures flirting with negative numbers froze out the first few weeks of the 2013-14 winter golf season, but it seems there are playable days ahead. Now that the holiday decorations are back in storage, use the free time to get a few swings in.
Golf On Long Island loves winter golf and wants local players to know that the golf season doesn't have to end in October. All you need is a warm hat and waterproof shoes. You can pass on the $100 wind and cold-weather gear, too -- any old turtleneck and zip-up fleece will do. The winter is a great time to play good courses at low rates and your own leisurely pace. Crowds are typically sparse.
Below is a sampling of offseason 18-hole rates at area courses. For full details about rates and course conditions, contact the course pro shops or visit their websites. Note that these do not represent discounted rates at all courses:
- Pine Ridge: $45 on weekdays, $35 after 12 p.m.; $52/$35 on weekends (all rates include cart)
- Middle Island Country Club: $45 on weekdays, $39 after 12 p.m.; $55/$45 on weekends (all rates include cart)
