Lido Golf Club will shut down for two weeks while the Town of Hempstead takes over control of the course from Double Eagle Golf, Lido's course operator for the past 20 years, Newsday reported this afternoon.
A Nassau County Supreme Court Judge denied Double Eagle's request for a temporary restraining order that would have prevented Hempstead from assuming control of the course at the end of the operator's contract on June 3. The course will close to the public this weekend and reopen on June 18, town officials told Newsday.
The fight between the town and its longtime course operator centers around claims of millions of dollars in missed payments, neglected improvements and other breaches of contract. Background on the disputes can be found in last week's GOLI post.
Meanwhile, with Lido out of commission for the first half of June, golfers can expect to find peak-season crowds even more tightly packed at Eisenhower Park, Bethpage and Middle Bay. And some in the local golf industry have recently chimed in to express doubt that Hempstead will adequately run the facility once it reopens in early summer.
