Golf Digest showed plenty of love to Long Island in its newly announced list of Best Golf Courses in New York for 2017-18, but only one of its many public courses received any adoration.
No surprise that the lone Long Island public on the list is Bethpage Black, which is ranked #7 in a star-studded group just ahead of the vaunted Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton as well as the historic Garden City Golf Club. Shinnecock Hills is the leader, one of four Long Island clubs to fill out the top five and seven in the top 10. Overall, local courses occupy 16 of the list's 30 facilities.
Earlier this year, Golf Digest ranked Bethpage #38 on its list of America's Greatest Golf Courses and #8 in its ranking of America's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses. The magazine cited conditioning improvements for the Black Course's rise in the Public Courses list ahead of this year's U.S. Open site, Erin Hills. An overview of Bethpage's 2017 renovations was published here this spring.
