Upgrades to the cart paths at the Sunken Meadow State Park golf courses will begin later this year, starting with the Red Course, according to an official with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
George Gorman, Jr., deputy regional director of NYS Parks, said the state has awarded a contract for the replacement and repair of cart paths at the park, as well as the addition of new paths where needed, with work expected to begin "just after the summer season." Upgrades on the Red Course will be the first phase of the project, with work on the Green and Blue courses to follow after its completion.
The state has made a series of improvements to the 27-hole golf facility over the past few seasons, including the addition of an irrigation pond now in play on the Green Course. In the past year, the park has built new bunkers and put down sod on several holes on the Red Course, including the two par-3s, #3 and #8.
Special thanks to GOLI reader Jeff Morris, who tipped us off to the news after sending repeated e-mails to NYS Parks to report the "downright dangerous" conditions of the paths. Morris, a frequent Sunken Meadow player, said the Red nine, outside of the cart paths, is "in the best condition" he's seen after the recent improvements.
