Buffet of holiday golf events planned around Long Island this Thanksgiving

Only a handful of golfers, outside the most frost-hardy Long Island players, associate Thanksgiving -- the holiday of turkey and football -- with November golf -- the sport of turtlenecks and foot-warmers.

However, golf comes with all the trimmings on Thanksgiving -- tournaments, prizes, open bars and sometimes an actual turkey.  It's the last call of the Long Island golf season before the winter players set their sight on frozen fairways and the rest head indoors until The Masters.  

The 2018 Thanksgiving slate is another smorgasbord of holiday tournaments, shotgun starts and other outings.  All are designed to get you home to the family with enough time to sneak appetizers.  Some tee off before or after Turkey Day.  Listed below are most of this year's outings, presented in alphabetical order (all outings are on Thanksgiving unless otherwise noted):

Brentwood Country Club is a typically early riser on Thanksgiving.  Shotgun tee time is scheduled for 7:30 a.m.  Rates are $42 for 18 holes and cart ($38 for seniors).  Complimentary roll and coffee included.  Call (631) 436-6060 to reserve a spot.

Cherry Creek Links is offering golf, cart and continental breakfast for $50.  Breakfast will be served at 8:00 a.m., with shotgun start following at 9:00.  Call (631) 369-6500 to reserve.

Harbor Links will host its 12th annual holiday Turkey Shoot.  Registration and breakfast begin at 8:00 a.m., followed by a 9:00 shotgun tee time.  Golf, cart and breakfast are $65 for Town of North Hempstead residents; $75 for non-residents.  Call (516) 767-4816.

Mill Pond (pictured above) will kick off its 12th annual Thanksgiving Turkey Shootout at 8 a.m.  The event almost always sells out fast.  Click the preceding link for full info.  [UPDATE: This event has been canceled due to weather.]

Pine Hills Golf & Country Club saves its annual holiday outing for Black Friday, November 23.  Shotgun tee time is 9:30 a.m.  The $65 entry fee includes cart, range, raffles, contests and a sleeve of golf balls.  Call (631) 878-7103 to sign up.

Pine Ridge Golf Club will celebrate Thanksgiving early with a golf and dinner party on Saturday, November 17.  For $65, golfers enjoy 18 holes with range access, followed by a holiday dinner and party with beer, wine, raffles and prizes.  Tee time is 11 a.m.  Register online at the Pine Ridge website.

Spring Lake Golf Club will again host its annual holiday scramble, which includes a hot breakfast buffet at 7 a.m. and an 8:00 tee time.  Call (631) 924-5115 for a spot.

Timber Point Golf Course is hosting a nine-hole scramble complete with prizes for "nearest to the pilgrim" (pin) and "longest turkey" (driving contest).  Bagels, coffee and juice are included along with cart and range balls for $55 per player.  Tee time is 9:30 a.m.  Register by Tuesday, November 20 either online or at the Timber Point pro shop.

Pine Hills planning its annual post-Thanksgiving holiday outing

Pine Hills Golf & Country Club will host a November holiday outing next week, though it's not the holiday you're expecting.  The Manorville course welcomes those who choose to avoid mall madness in favor of post-holiday golf to its annual Black Friday Turkey Shoot, slated to tee off at 9:30 a.m. on November 23.

The event includes cart, warm-up on the range, a sleeve of balls, raffle tickets and entry into several contests.  Rate is $65 per player.  Check-in begins at 8:30.  Sign up in the Pine Hills pro shop or call (631) 878-7103.

Thanksgiving Day shotgun on the slate at Cherry Creek Links

The Links Course at Cherry Creek in Riverhead will hold its annual holiday shotgun outing this Thanksgiving morning, November 22.  Tee time is 9:00 a.m.

The outing includes cart, range balls and a pre-round continental breakfast starting at 8:00.  Entry fee is $50.  Visit the pro shop to register or call (631) 369-6500.

Shotgun tee time scheduled for Thanksgiving morning at Brentwood

Early risers looking for a round as the sun comes up on Thanksgiving morning might have a match at Brentwood Country Club.

Brentwood is sending all golfers out with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start this upcoming holiday morning, November 22.  A complimentary coffee and roll should help keep everyone warm.  Entry fee is $42 with cart ($38 for seniors).

Starting holes will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.  Register by visiting or calling the pro shop at (631) 436-6060.

Fellow Town of Islip munis Holbrook Country Club and Gull Haven Golf Course will be open for regular play.

Timber Point hosting Thanksgiving Day scramble

Timber Point's tradition of themed holiday outings continues this Thanksgiving, as the Great River golf course will host a Turkey Day scramble complete with longest turkey (drive) and nearest to the pilgrim (pin) contests.

Tee time is 9:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning.  The $55 entry fee covers bagels, coffee and non-alcoholic beverages (this year's event is BYOB).  Format is a nine-hole, four-person scramble.  In addition to the above contests, Timber Point will also feature its customary pre-round putting challenge.

Veterans play free, plus early Thanksgiving, next week at Pine Ridge

Next week at Pine Ridge Golf Club will begin with a generous pre-Veterans Day promotion and end with a tee sheet of golfers celebrating early Thanksgiving.

Veterans and active military members play free on Sunday, November 11.  Book tee times online at the Pine Ridge website.

The Coram course will also celebrate early Thanksgiving -- a recent tradition at Pine Ridge -- on Saturday, November 17.  For $65, golfers can enjoy 18 holes of golf with cart and range balls, followed by a holiday dinner party featuring beer, wine, raffles and prizes.  Tee time is 11:00 a.m. with the party slated to last into the night.  Reservations for the "Friendsgiving" event can also be booked at the Pine Ridge website.

Harbor Links hosting annual Turkey Shoot outing on Thanksgiving morning

Harbor Links will host its 12th annual Turkey Shoot holiday outing on Thanksgiving morning, November 22.

Shotgun start is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. after registration and breakfast.  Cost for Town of North Hempstead residents is $65 with cart and breakfast included; $75 for non-residents.  Call (516) 767-4816 to sign up.

Winter rates are now in effect on the Harbor Links Championship Course.  Resident rates are $70 on weekends, $65 on weekdays and $32 for twilight rounds (after 12 noon).  Add $10 to all rates for non-residents.

Mill Pond featuring Veterans Day promotion, Thanksgiving Turkey Shootout

It's holiday season at Mill Pond Golf Course, which is continuing its tradition of luring players to Medford to celebrate Veterans Day and Thanksgiving with the promise of golf incentives. 

Back for another Veterans Day is Mill Pond's "Comeback Coupon."  On Monday, November 12, any golfer who pays for a round is entitled to a free follow-up greens fee valid now through April 26, 2019.  The coupon can be used for any weekday round of equal or lesser value.  Cart and reservation fees are not included.  (Golfers must also be on Mill Pond's e-mail list to receive the coupon.)

Later this month, Mill Pond will host its 12th annual Turkey Shootout, a Thanksgiving tradition with a loyal following.  The typically sold-out Shootout is a two-person scramble that includes a breakfast buffet, prizes, contests and raffles, plus plenty of time to get home for holiday festivities.  Entry fee is $74 per player (payment is due at registration).  Sign up at the Mill Pond pro shop or call (631) 732-8249.

Island's End to host annual fall scramble tournament on November 11

The last round of tournaments and holiday outings for the 2018 season will tee off this month as Long Island courses prepare for winter.  Out in Greenport, Island's End Golf & Country Club will host its annual fall scramble on Sunday, November 11.

The tournament includes breakfast, buffet lunch and an hour of open bar in addition to range balls, cart and 18 holes on the waterside course.  Two-person teams will compete for low gross and low net prizes.  Shotgun start is scheduled for 9 a.m.  Entry fee is $99.
