There are brave, determined souls across Long Island that will lace up their golf shoes and pad themselves in layer after layer of cold-weather golf apparel long after most other area golfers have buried their clubs in the basement. Island courses, with only a handful of exceptions, feed this year-round hunger for golf by keeping their doors open through the winter. Managers and staff work hard to find the right balance between maintaining the quality of their courses and allowing offseason players to hack away. Overall, Long Islanders with a golf itch on a 30-degree day in January or February will almost always be able to find a place to play.
One of the benefits of winter golf is that beginners can experience some of the better courses without the intimidation of a big summer crowd or a fast foursome on their tail. Players who avoid the Island's more expensive courses may be tempted to visit in the offseason to take advantage of slightly reduced rates. (Deep discounts are much less common in the winter season than they were just a few years ago.) Golfers that don't mind swinging their irons while buried under four layers of clothing or watching a perfectly struck wedge bounce off a frozen green like a vending-machine superball will find winter golf to their liking.
Golf On Long Island attempts to make information on the winter golf season easy to access by posting updates on conditions and closures, as necessary. Be sure to follow local courses on social media for information on things like weather closures, frost delays and rate specials.

Courses that shut down in the offseason generally do so in mid- to late December and plan for a mid-March or April reopening. Tentative course reopening dates will be posted here on Golf On Long Island starting in early March.
